Wera Hobhouse, First UK MP Denied Entry to Hong Kong|A Red Line Has Been Crossed

25/06/2025, ,

Imagine, you arrive at Immigration Control at the airport, show your passport and then everything seems to go wrong. Five hours later you are put on a return flight. And nobody tells you why. That’s what happened to the British MP, Wera Hobhouse, back in April when she tried to visit her son and new grandson in Hong Kong.

She is our guest in this edition of “Let’s Talk”, discussing why that incident has reinforced her views on Hong Kong, on a parliamentarian’s duty to speak out and on why Britain should draw some red lines in its relationship with China.

As a member of the Liberal Democrat Party, Wera Hobhouse also has strong views on how Britain should support BNO visa holders and what her teenage experience of witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall has taught her about the collapse of autocracies.
