Cleaner, and So Much More

Hongkongers love working, but often, once they enter the workplace, they conform to the system, lose their sense of autonomy, and hesitate to question the status quo.

Since 2007, artist Luke Ching has integrated labor activism into daily life. He has successfully fought for rights such as chairs for museum security guards and cashiers, as well as the choice for convenience store clerks to wear hats. For Ching, creativity shouldn’t belong exclusively to artists, nor should art always be confined to expensive galleries. With imagination, anyone can be an artist.

In 2021, he took his efforts further by becoming a part-time cleaner for the MTR. During his routine work, he launched ads, staged silent protests, and sang on Instagram. In an era where traditional organizations are vanishing and established methods are scarce, he believes that by simply trying and using imagination to surpass limitations, people can blur rigid identities, reclaim autonomy, and uncover countless possibilities.
