My Destiny or My Choice?

Siu Tat MUNG joined the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions immediately after graduation from university. Working closely with Cheuk Yan LEE, a trade union leader and former member of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council, he spent 26 years at the now-defunct group. In 2021, as a group of 47 people were charged with subversion in relation to an unofficial primary election held in the city in the previous year, his wife and daughter decided to relocate to Britain. The idea of leaving with his family did not cross his mind at first, because he wanted to continue his work. Yet as circumstances changed and Hong Kong’s civil society collapsed, he was eventually forced to make a choice between family and comrades.
